Art and Design

At St Mary’s we strive for a high quality art education to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As children progress through the school, they are able to think more critically and develop a richer understanding of varied art techniques. Across the key stages, children build on the five main skill areas: drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture. We focus particularly on sketching skills so that drawings become more precise as pupils journey through the school. Children are taught how art both reflects and shapes our history and contributes to the culture and creativity of our nation. We encourage a love and appreciation for art in all its forms. Living so close to Orleans House Gallery and the many museums in London, we take every opportunity to make the most of our locality.
