We are currently in a weather sandwich. The hot, sunny weather of last week has gone but forecasts predict it to return in all its glory next week. This week, however, we are the filling to that bread sunshine. A filling comprised of rain and wind. They say there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad choice of clothes; that may be true but even more important than appropriate attire is resilience and a positive mindset and this group of Year 6s have that in bucket loads – apt for the beach!

This morning the alarm sounded a 7.45am. Most were already up (ouch) and we had 15 minutes to get downstairs for either a sea pool swim or beach run – in torrential rain. When we got through the beach we found high tide to have consumed much of the beach and the entire pool but sprint challenges left everyone feeling exhilarated, exhausted and ready for a fry-up.

Sitting eating breakfast in our wet clothes, we devoured all in front of  us fuelling our bodies for a rich variety of activities.

Some marched off to the canal to test their teamwork skills. I think most ended up in the canal – some by accident and most by choice.

Others hiked to the hills to try their luck at mountain boarding – almost everyone fell but everyone had fun.

Gaggles of body boarders and surfers waddled down to the beach getting whipped by the horizontal rain. The sea was a bubbling cauldron of white foam but just about manageable. Getting wetsuits on and off was quite another matter! That, I must confess, nobody was any good at.

Following the afternoon activities, between 4-5pm, there was a blissful moment (for adults) to rest before dinner. Chicken burgers, chips and apple crumble were followed by birthday celebrations and more cake – yum.

Spirits do not only remain high but are elevating by the minute. The weather isn’t all that bad with nuggets of dry spells and sunshine here and there.

It’s fancy dress tonight. Watch this space later to see some very unique outfits. I’ve already seen some minions at dinner!
