At St Mary’s, our history curriculum enables our children to make connections, ask questions and draw conclusions across and between the topics they study. Our chosen concepts of
change and continuity and
invasion thread through our curriculum and drive the content of our learning. Our topic-based curriculum, where historical undrestanding is not only developed in specific history lessons but also through writing, reading, art and other subjects, allows pupils to develop a broader understanding of historical periods and themes. Children develop a strong sense of chronology for the periods they study.
Through the use of artefacts, art and a variety of other sources, we nurture the children’s ability to ask and answer increasingly pertinent and challenging questions about the time period they are studying whilst maintaining empathy for those who have lived before us. Children learn a wide range of historical vocabulary, using that to discuss their own points of view on historical figures and events. Our goal at St Mary’s is that all children learn from the past and use that knowledge to create a better future.
